The New Paths of Knowledge |
|
|
|||
|
Dear (faithful) Readers,
It always gives us great pleasure to greet you every four months, since quite a few years now and today, we may complement these greetings with all our best wishes for 2002! You are well over 2000 people reading us (or not?) in all parts of the world, most of you engaged in professional activities close to our own. Some of you also visit our web site, where by the way, all past issues of our Newsletter can be found; this is the reason why we never issue an annual report: just look at our last three issues at any point in time, and it will give you a fair overview of our recent activities. Right now, we are starting two new EC contracts, ADONIS and 6NET, while our NGN-LAB project was just successfully reviewed – and we may pre-announce an important event that will take place at ULB on March 19: “IPv6 in Belgium and in Europe – The future of the Internet”; make a note in your agendas if you live close enough to Brussels! Meanwhile, on top of the recent activities described in this issue, we maintain our long term relationships with BANKSYS, BELNET, CIRB/CIBG, CISCO, DIMENSION DATA, as well as the Belgian Broadband Platform, the Belgian Teleworking Association, BELTUG, the Brussels Teleport, DNS.BE and the Walloon Telecommunications Agency. With three new faces in the Group in the last months (and no departures!), and our collaboration with ARPnet, we are again more than 15 people working together and advancing on the New Paths of Knowledge. The pictures below will let you see how good we look! Happy reading,
Paul VAN BINST

The
concepts of teleworking, flexible working, e-work attract more and more attention
and are taken into consideration by many - private and public - organisations.
Through the Belgian Teleworking Association and the FLEXWORK project, we have been involved in many events where these matters are presented, discussed, indeed sometimes hotly debated, by people who are practically concerned with the possible outcome of the “new ways of working”. A solid series of workshops and presentations were conducted in a few months, as can be seen below (the FLEXWORK project is particularly aimed at the Belgian Luxembourg province and at the French Ardennes department): |

ASCOM products |
"IT-SCAN" PUBLICATION |
|
|
Before commercialising their security products, ASCOM had the assessment
of their products made by STC. The products of ASCOM are of the IT_SEC range
and are based on the smart cards technology.
The survey made on the ASCOM products consists in verifying the features announced of each product, and to make a comparison with some competitor products in terms of offered features. Service Télématique et Communication will also participate in the seminar that ASCOM will organize next February in order to announce its entrance into the market of security. |

Due to the success of the "technology watch" project, the contract between
Brussels Technopol and ULB-STC has been renewed, to produce a series of
newsletters during the year 2002.
The activity consists in a permanent survey of the evolution of the ICT world, with a special attention to the news that may interest companies in the Brussels Region; news collected by ULB-STC are assembled in a periodic newsletter, called "IT-SCAN", sent to about 700 organizations, who may ask Technopol for more information and documents related to the subjects summarized in the publication, in Dutch and French. The 2002 contract foresees a number of newsletters as well as some thematic publications. |

conferences |

|
|
“Les
Midis du Téléport/De Middagen van Telepoort” go on in 2002
with a small change: the first three conferences will not take place at the
usual location at the Brussels Teleport, but will be organised in partnership
with three different Brussels Region institutions:
- Wednesday, January 23, at EEBIC - Wednesday, February 20, with SDRB/GOMB - Tuesday, March 12, at UEB/VOB |
In the
frame of the CETEL conferences, Service Télématique et Communication
participated on the 18th of December in GRAND HORNU in a conference about
electronic signature.
The topic of the conference was: "Signature électronique: aspects techniques et juridiques". It was focused towards leaders and managers of the SME and VSE, and to all interested public in basic information on electronic signature. |

ADONIS,
"Application Development Outsourcing to the New Independent States", is an
EC IST project jointly coordinated by the Brussels University and EuroTex.
ADONIS proposes to enhance the benefits of the Information Society for Europe by assisting European organisations and enterprises in the development of their software programs and products in collaboration with the programmers in Russia, Ukraine and Armenia. The project will design, implement and trial a pan-European software outsourcing service that will make application development in the NIS formally available to European organisations and enterprises. |
||||||
|
The
project involves 12 participants from 6 countries (Armenia, Belgium, Finland,
Germany, Russia and Ukraine) and will last two and half years, starting from
1 November 2001.
Information on the development of ADONIS will be available on www.NewAdonis.com or www.eurotex.org/newadonis. The picture shows some of the ADONIS partners at the kick off meeting which took place in Brussels on December 7. |

On October 8 and 9 in Limelette near Brussels, a very high-level workshop gathered together a group of about 25 American and European experts in the field of networking. This was almost the ultimate step in a process that spanned a number of months, to complete a study made by RAND, in collaboration with ULB-STC, on the future of networking in Europe. This workshop allowed the draft conclusions to be presented, discussed and validated, prior to the writing of the final report, which has now been completed. |

"The
Communication Area" opens on February 19th 2002.
The new millenium rhymes with the technological evolution of information. It's an unquestionable reality : new technologies are a daily part of our lives. This exhibition invites visitors to live a totally new experience. It approaches much technical aspects (how does communication work? How does a message get codified? How does its transmission work? How is it distributed on a network? etc.) and also human aspects (remote experimentation, e-learning, jobs evolution, new challenges for companies, etc.). These characterize the newest developments in the world of communications. "The Communication Area" isn't restricted to a present situation record but brings about a reflection on the use of new technologies and their applications in our society |

The contract for Europe’s largest Internet research project, 6NET, has
been signed by the European Commission and the project will begin on January
1, 2002 to deploy and to test under realistic conditions the Internet Protocol
Version 6 (IPv6). This is a major upgrade to the Internet’s basic transmission
format, required to allow vastly larger numbers of connected devices and
innovative styles of Internet application.
* The 31 project partners, coordinated by CISCO, represent a rich combination of research and industrial organizations. They will enable IPv6 technology to be transferred from 6NET into production equipment and services in industry and academia across Europe, strengthening Europe's position for future economic growth. * The 6Net project consortium will provide a native IPv6 network on an international scale, spanning to North America and the Asia-Pacific region, for test and demonstration purposes. * The 6Net infrastructure will connect more countries at a higher capacity than any other native IPv6 network deployed to date. 6Net will install, operate and support a pan-European native IPv6 network, initially spanning nine countries, with links of up to 2.5Gbit/s. The total consortia in vestment in 6NET will be close to 17 M€ requiring 1100 person-months. The potential contribution from the EC’s Information Society Technologies Programme is over 9.5 M€ over a period of three years.
